The String Beans
2026 (4 weeks)
Objective: create a playful installation for the Weinland Park Community in Columbus, OH

The String Beans feature a string art collaborative installation and elastic, module seating. With the goal of interconnecting the community, the environment focuses on encouraging users to continue the string that others have left.

The Site
The chosen site exists in Indianola Park in Columbus, OH. The two existing benches posed issues of awkward interaction, confrontation, and separation.
We created a survey titled "Where Would you Sit?" to validate these ideas and get a sample of human behavior in public social situations. We received 85 responses that confirmed our hypothesis of the objection to sitting across from an unknown person.
Ideation
Our ideation focused on creating connection between users without it feeling awkward or forced.
Construction
We utilized cardboard, foamcore, plywood, elastic, and yarn to construct our pieces. We focused on having one working model and using supplemental materials to illustrate the space to users.
Final Images
